Context

The contests pitted Temple against schools in the U.S. and abroad, including the universities of Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, and Colorado; Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan University, and the University of Gdansk in Poland.

Temple is hosting the 2019 conference. Now in its fifth year, 582 students participated in the competition, organized by the Institute for Business and Information Technology (IBIT), where participants solve important industry-specific problems using data.

Challenges

Does speed matter in e-commerce?

🚚 Distribution Network

Does the current distribution network maximize customer penetration (spend)?

If not, what should QVC do to increase customer penetration with the current distribution network?

🛍️ Products

Are there specific products or product categories that should be located in specific distribution centers?

⏱️ Delivery Times

Do customers that receive their product sooner purchase more than customers with longer delivery times?

Honors

First Place — Chi Pham, Ngoc (Nathan) Pham, Run Zhu

Chi Pham ’19, Ngoc Pham ’19, and Run Zhu ’18 focused on QVC’s existing warehouses to determine why customers complained about deliveries. Data showed that a majority were unhappy waiting more than one week for goods. They found that 97 percent of products shipped from four Northeastern warehouses to customers nationwide.

Solution

We provided our recommendations for highly underutilized distribution centers in terms of product categories based on their sales. By implementing our recommendations, QVC could increase its sales volume in California, Texas, and Florida within three months.

Design Inspiration

As a graphic designer, I incorporated QVC’s brand colors as the main colors for the infographic. The background resembles the carton texture of the shipping box.
